Portis PRIDE

recieves Pride Star

Portis was one of twenty Kansas communities to earn a Kansas Pride Program award for their work in community development and civic improvement. Portis PRIDE was a recipient of the PRIDE Star award for the construction of a much needed shelter house in the City Park.

Cristie Haug, Portis Pride president attended the PRIDE Day Conference held September 10, 2009 at the Courtyard by Marriout Hotel, JunctionCity, Kan.

Haug accepted the award trophy and $350 cash award.

Portis Park Pride

Last year the Portis Pride received several nice grants to help improve and beautify our city park. The first major project is building a shelter house. It will be completed this spring and add a nice addition to our Park. The plans for this summer, will be to add a basketball court and tennis combination.
All the work is donated by city folks. Dustin and Christie Haug were instrumental in getting the Shelter House project going. After running cement for the floor and using cinder blocks for corners, a metal roof will be added to complete the project. Several people donated lot of hours including Jim Rogers, as well as others. Again this summer we will need some willing help to complete the courts project. We hope you will take Pride in Portis.

Walk Across Kansas

Several Portis Residents are participating in County Extension Office fitness challenge. More than 20,000 Kansans are moving toward better health. Recent studies have shown that walking 30 minutes a day can add three to four years to your life, so dust off those shoes and start walking!. This is partial requirements for State Pride Grant we received from state, for more improvement in City Park. Each participant is to record distance as well as portions of fruit and vegetables eaten each day. Everyone is enjoying the nice days and seeing a difference in their physical improvement. Of course the beautiful Kansas weather has been a motivater lately.
